Fairphone 4 supported by postmarketOS

The Fairphone 4 from the Dutch manufacturer Fairphone BV was officially presented yesterday. Like its predecessors, it is a mid-range device whose concept is characterized by fair conditions in production and the use of raw materials that are as clean as possible. The modular structure stands for longevity and easy repairability. For the first time, the manufacturer is offering a generous guarantee period of five years, which is unusual in the industry.

Good middle class

The specification of the Fairphone 4 offers a Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G processor, which can be combined with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory or with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory. The memory can be expanded by up to two Tbytes using a microSD card.

The 6.3-inch display, protected by Gorilla Glass 5, offers a resolution of 1080 x 2340 with a pixel density of 410 ppi. The exchangeable battery has an output of 3905 mAh. The device supports the 5G cellular standard.

Android 11 is used as the operating system. The manufacturer promises updates that include Android 12 and 13 by at least 2025. In addition, Fairphone BV intends to do its own thing to ensure support until 2027, which would also include Android 14 and 15. The pricing starts at 580 euros.

Interesting for fans of Linux phones is that the Fairphone 4 is by from day one postmarketOS in the mainline kernel rudimentarily supported . According to the project’s wiki , the OS can be flashed onto the device, after which the display functions as a simple framebuffer screen and buttons and USB can be used. postmartketOS already provided support for the first three generations of the Fairphone.

While the Fairphone 2 officially offered an Android without Google apps with “Fairphone Open”, for the successor Fairphone 3 by the e.Foundation in cooperation with Fairphone BV support for / e / OS was implemented . It is still unclear whether the current device will also work with / e / OS in the future. It can currently only be with Android 11 pre-ordered .
