Handbrake 1.4.0: Video transcoder with many improvements

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr

The popular video transcoder HandBrake 1.4.0 has been released for Linux, macOS and Windows. Handbrake supports the transcoding of video files in many popular container formats such as AVI, Matroska or MP4 into many output formats.

Support for 10 and 12 bits

HandBrake 1.4.0 comes with a lot of improvements. In addition to many updated third-party libraries such as ffmpeg 4.4, harfbuzz 2.8.1, dav1d 0.9.0, x264 161 r3043 and x265 3.5, the HandBrake engine now supports 10 and 12 bit, but not all filters are capable of this. HDR10 metadata, if any, is now passed through from the source file. Static previews generated during file scans are using libjpeg-turbo saved in compressed .jpeg format (previously as YUV420). The temporary storage space requirements and the write processes on the hard disk are massively reduced.

New filters

the filters Chroma Smoot h and Colourspace Selection have been added to . In addition, support for hardware-accelerated cutting and scaling via Intel’s QuickSync encoder is possible when using the full path. Hardware encoding can now be used under Windows Media Foundation as a new encoder for devices based on arm64 . The function for subtitles has also been given a new decoder. This offers support for DVB subtitles. The current decoders for PGS, SRT and SSA have been replaced by those in ffmpeg. This should fix a number of rendering issues with burn-in subtitles.

Philosophy and Ethics of The GNOME Desktop Environment

GUI upgraded

The GUI received improvements on all supported platforms. Under Microsoft, the GUI requires at least Microsoft .NET 5 Desktop Runtime . In addition, Windows 10 is now the minimum supported version. The application is currently still running on Windows 7 and 8.1, apart from a warning. However, it is possible that some functions no longer work correctly on these older operating systems.
