Today in this post we learn How to Install GNOME 40.1 Stable Update on Ubuntu Linux, We all know GNOME 40 is revolutionary UI for LINUX world, and we all love to use their user interface and handy flexibility with some top features like Fresh New Look and Largely Unchanged Workflow, beautiful Workspace Gestures, Visual Changes with switched GTK4 from GTK3, New weather, Nautilus, and lots of apps updates with newer UI, And today finally GNOME Development team Released their GOME Shell 40.1 stable point released including a bugfix and some translation updates and added with gnome-disk-utility updated version with 40.1 with disks utility to write an ISO to a USB stick, create and change some partitions with make some S.M.A.R.T attributes view expand vertically

Let’s go to the point how to install GNOME 40.1 on your Ubuntu, Using following simple steps-by-step guide;

Install GNOME 40.1 on Ubuntu using PPA repository ;

Test packages of GNOME 40. Definitely NOT official. Should be as close to upstream release as possible, except when Debian/Ubuntu patches can still apply.

WARNING: GNOME 40 is not yet officially supported in Hirsute Hippo. This PPA is just for testing. It breaks sometimes, especially when I’m upgrading the packages.

Note: Make sure to use GDM GNOME session and not Ubuntu since Yaru theme is not yet updated for GNOME 40. So make sure you install gnome-session if the GNOME session in GDM is not showing up.

Adding this PPA to your system

You can update your system with unsupported packages from this untrusted PPA by adding ppa:shemgp/gnome-40 to your system’s Software Sources. (Read about installing)

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:shemgp/gnome-40
$ sudo apt-get update      

Installing packages after adding this PPA:

1. Manually upgrade mutter:
  $ sudo apt install mutter=40.0-0shemgpubuntu6 -y
2. Manually upgrade gnome-shell:
  $ sudo apt install gnome-shell=40.0-0shemgpubuntu3 -y
3. Install gnome-session:
  $ sudo apt install gnome-session -y
4. Upgrade the rest:
  $ sudo apt upgrade -y
5. Reboot
6. Click your username then the gear icon to select GNOME or
  $ GNOME on Xorg session.
