Open-Shot is a non-linear video editor from the open source area, which is also aimed at beginners and users who are less familiar with the subject. OpenShot 2.6.0 has just been released after more than a year of development. The wait seems to have been worth it, as the new version promises interesting improvements.
First computer vision and AI effects
According to the the latest version includes announcement by developer Jonathan Thomas, new computer vision and AI effects . This includes functions for motion tracking and object recognition as well as a configurable stabilization effect that is supposed to eliminate shaky recordings. With motion tracking, called a tracker in OpenShot, a frame can be drawn around any element in the video, and then the coordinates of that object can be tracked in each frame. After the calculation, the movement and the coordinates are cached for a quick video preview in real time. This motion data can then be used in the animation system by appending another clip to these coordinates.
Still in beta
The new object recognition identifies all objects in a scene and makes it possible to draw frames around certain object types, for example to identify all people or all cars in a scene or to add text labels over each object. This data can in turn be used in the animation system, for example to attach a clip to all objects of a certain type. This effect is still in beta and requires downloading some additional files for the AI model, but can already be used experimentally.
New audio effects
In addition, OpenShot 2.6.0 offers nine new audio effects. A new slider for the zoom above the timeline is intended to facilitate the overview and precise cutting. The new version supports FFmpeg 4 and improves support for Blender. In addition, OpenShot 2.6.0 offers better performance and stability when rendering and zooming in the timeline. Many other improvements can be found in the announcement . An AppImage for testing the new version is available until OpenShot 2.6.0 appears in the distribution archives. Additional packages are available for macOS, Chrome OS and Windows.
